What's the Difference Between an Adjustable and Standard Wedge?

Have you heard about seat or bed wedges? But maybe didn't know what they were all about? If so you're not alone. Though the wedge is one of our favorite products, not everyone has experienced just how wonderful it can be. But that's not all, even those who have experienced an inclined pillow don't understand the difference between standard and adjustable versions.

So just what is a wedge? And what are the perks that come with versatile models?

A wedge is a piece of cushion or foam that's made of an inclined shape. Whether made to sit on, sleep against, or lounge upon, it helps support the body while allowing plenty of comfort on the process. They're used to add comfort while, as well as a healing prop to any number of medical conditions. Wedges help ease snoring, increase oxygen and blood flow, decrease symptoms of heartburn, GERD, etc. They can also help with pregnancy and post-surgery recovery.

Standard Vs. Custom

With a standard wedge, the user is given a static shape and angle to use throughout the length of their cushion's usage. While pillows can be added, they won't always stay put and will offer a different texture that can become lumpy or lopsided over time.

With a custom wedge, however, the texture is much of the same, as well as the design. However, it also comes with additional features. The pillow can be folded or moved into different shapes or positions. With some versions, pieces even zip apart or together to maximize your functions. Adjustable wedges can be switched up for size – allowing users to create a travel model, or go full-out when lounging at home. Choose one that's inflatable, memory foam that forms to your body over time, or stick with static support.

Adjustable wedges offer users more options than their standard counterparts. Head to our wedge page to check out models, or live-chat an expert on our home page to learn more today.

Why Do You Need a Wedge Cushion?

Sleeping with a wedge pillow
If you've never heard or a wedge cushion, or never experienced its magic, it can be hard to get hyped up about this little miracle. Sure it's a pillow, so it's obviously comfortable, but why does it need to be in a wedge shape? And what's so great about sleeping on an incline, anyway?

The wedge design, however, is actually a structural dream come true. Because the slope is gradual, it allows for as much comfort as possible. Yet without causing you to lounge on an extreme angle. This comes especially handy when you need to sleep on a wedge after surgery, with breathing issues, acid reflux, etc. Those who snore have found relief (or rather their sleeping partners have found relief) with a wedge pillow, as have folks suffering from a cold or allergies. Doctors often recommend this type of sleeping arrangement, allowing gravity to work with the body, yet many patients find it so comfortable that they never look back.

Incline pillows can also be paired with additional head support when reading or watching TV. Or simply sleep on your incline for a comfortable way to rest each night.

So why do you need one?

They're versatile, help add cushion and alignment to the bed, and more. They help alleviate a number of symptoms, such as heartburn or discomfort that's associated with GERD or acid reflux. Wedge pillows can also aid in sinus drainage and clearing your throat when sick, as well as helping to reduce snoring. Besides, they're just plain comfortable.

Convinced yet? Head to our wedge pillow page for our large selection of wedge solutions.. Or check out the reviews and see what praises others have for this cure-all pillow. It will revolutionize the way you're able to sleep and gain comfort, no matter what your resting needs might be.

Improve Mattress Comfort with the Memory Foam Topper

Ready to sleep like a dream? Without spending a fortune? No matter your reasoning for wanting to upgrade, there is an easy, affordable solution: a mattress topper. It’s an addition that can adhere to all types of beds, all sizes, and comes in a variety of preferences. For instance, if you want a softer bed but your spouse likes sleeping firm, get a topper for half of the bed. Or find an in-between topper for the entire model that can help compromise on both sides of the spectrum.

Mattress covers can also add incredible amounts of comfort and support. Even if your bed is perfectly new and respectable, this extra layer can bring bone and muscle alignment throughout the entire night. It will also help lengthen the lifespan of your mattress, reducing wear and tear and how weight settles.

Why Try the Cloud Memory Foam Mattress Topper?

This product not only comes with a Comfort Guarantee, meaning it can be returned for a full 90 days after purchase, but is specifically for a better sleep experience. It’s three layers of complete memory-having, comfort-giving foams. All to allow you as much cushion as possible, in a design that won’t break down over time.

Layer one – Soft Touch Memory Foam. Made of plush, space-age memory foam, this is perhaps our favorite part of all. It molds to your body’s exact shape and size, creating a cradled sleeping surface.

Layer two – Yellow Support Insert. You guessed it, this layer adds support where you need it most: the waist, lower back, and hips.

Layer three – Firm Blue Base. Another layer for support, this final section ensures the topper won’t lose integrity or sink with weight. Its firm material holds everything together and makes it last.

Dr. Explains Back Pain in YouTube Video

Anymore, there’s a YouTube video for virtually anything and everything. From learning a new skill to simply being entertained, it’s likely that someone has created a video out of it. (Along with tens of other online users.) Including what causes back pain – and how to reduce its symptoms. Whether caused by muscle spams with age or a specific injury, it’s outlined in this comprehensive and free-to-watch video.

Dr. Mike Evans, who is known for his educational, yet easy-to-follow videos, has helped create white board outlines on any number of medical issues. However, one of his latest releases, on back pain, has received widespread acclaim. It was even mentioned on NPR for helping other doctors explain medical ailments to their patients. Including one specific case, where the patient had done her own research but still hadn’t come to terms with the outcome. One YouTube viewing later, and her doctor was able to make a believer out of her in terms of the lower back.

The video goes into the ins and outs of the lower back from a medical standpoint. Including what causes pain, how muscles work in tandem with one another, and more. Especially what happens in the event of an injury, or rather what types of movements cause said injuries. Best of all, there are visual aids to help even the least medically inclined of folks understand just what’s happening beneath the skin. Patients love that it offers an entertaining way to learn about their bodies, while doctors say it’s a great aid for explaining treatment options and symptoms. And in the process, it can help eliminate ongoing pains through user education and participation.

To better understand your own back’s intricacies, or to learn more about the body as a whole, check out Dr. Evans’s back-related video today.   For back support and comfort ideas - click here.

Snuggle Up with Contour’s New L-Pillow

How often do you toss and turn looking for that perfect side sleeping position? A few times a month? A few times a week? A night? No matter the frequency, it just seems that sometimes, it’s practically impossible to stay comfortable while sleeping on your side.

Until now. With the help of Contour Living’s brand new L-Shaped pillow, sleepers of all ages and sizes can get the side support they’ve been waiting for. As its name suggests, this pillow takes the shape of a literal L, leaving a section for one’s head and neck, and another for the side, knees, or arms. Turn it around to flip over, or adjust as needed to achieve optimal side-sleeping comfort.

Who Should Use the L-Shaped Pillow

The L-Pillow is great for anyone looking for a relaxing, supportive way to sleep. As well as those suffering from ongoing aches and pains caused from improper alignment, recent surgery patients, or those looking for a better way to rest each night.

Also made for anyone who’s looking for a little extra body support, this pillow offers a plush resting space for the spinal system. Lay down your neck and head for an added bit of comfort – also keeping it steadily in place – while simultaneously aligning the spine, hips, and back. The pillow is also great for properly adjusting shoulders without adding extra weight or pressure.

Sleepers can “hug” their pillow to reduce resting weight on the arms, or just adjust to find the proper position – no matter how your prefer to sleep.

Additional Features

The L-Pillow also comes with:

• Premium fabric – let the microfiber feel help soothe you into sleep.
• Quality construction – durable and made to last, each pillow is made with the utmost precision and care.
• Support for nursing or holding your baby – adjust the pillow to achieve maximum comfort while giving baby the care he or she needs.

Hunchbacks in Pop Culture – Our Favorite Back Health Sufferers

Traditionally in society, the presence of a hunched-over back is a sign of bad health, or even alienation from the rest of the population. Cartoons used the condition as a way to show true character, live-action films offered it to create fear, and ever since, viewers have looked down upon those with irregular backs. However, bad rap aside, hunchbacks have grown into one of pop culture’s most-loved characters. Whether they had to overcome a stereotype or learn to accept themselves – abnormal features and all – here are some of our favorite spinally challenged roles.

The Beast

A title character from Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast,” this character comes with a curved back, among other ailments (such as claws, more fur than he knows what to do with, etc.). Though the “hunch” likely comes from his transformation into an animal-like being, it’s a feature that comes to define his character, and which is ultimately overcome.

Lumpy Addams

Unfortunate name aside, Lump Addams, a cousin to the Addams family, is a key player in the series. He is the brother of fan favorite Cousin Itt, and child of Anemia and That. Though he rarely speaks, Lumpy makes appearances in both the 1991 and 1993 movie versions of the franchise.

Quasimodo

Perhaps pop culture’s most famous hunchback, Quasimodo of “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” starts the film as a kind, unloved character. Though he’s regularly told his condition is a point of shame, he and others grow to accept his differences, realizing that his loving nature more than makes up for any physical changes.

Manthara

A main player in the Hindu epic, Ramayana, Manthara works as a loyal servant. In this story, however, her condition is likely a direct reflection of personality, as she uses cunning conversation and eavesdropping to alter events. The behavior eventually catches up with her, when she is nearly killed by those who she wronged – though many readers still admire her ability to overturn the main storyline’s events.

Through stories and portrayals, hunchbacks have long since been a staple in pop culture. And though the condition continues to affect the human population, hopefully it’s only a matter of time before the illness is considered a virtue of character – rather than a medium on which to condemn.

The Health Perks of Going Barefoot

Going without shoes – or barefoot – is usually a hit or miss trend. Either you love it, or you hate it and are sure it’s going to cause all types of sicknesses. But despite your previous allegiance, there are several benefits to be had from going without shoes. No, you still shouldn’t run down the street or venture into the porta potties without foot protection, but in safe, clean environments, you can easily improve your health just by going without shoes.

And if you’re still weary about it, start at home, then venture into the yard. Then try a friend’s house, water park, or any other (clean) public place where a lack of shoes is kosher. Before long, you’ll have developed a newfound freedom that only the shoe-less can enjoy.

What can it do for your health?

Avoiding shoes for an hour or two each day can work to improve your posture, mood, and feet placement. Without a shoe to guide and align the feet, we’re left to figure it out for ourselves. This is like hitting a “reset” button on our posture, letting the legs, back, and feet redefine what’s comfortable and supportive.

Runners are beginning to jog without foot support as well, but this is a more extreme switch. Try it if you dare (with your doctor’s approval), but a few hours around the house each day should also do the trick.

It’s also said that going barefoot can help to improve one’s mood. By connecting directly with the ground, there’s a scientific theory that says it will help reunite you with the earth. This may sound somewhat sketchy, but there is actual data showing that electrons from the ground can be absorbed by one’s body; scientists say this works to rejuvenate energy levels, which often results in a lifted spirit.

Walking outside while barefoot has also been shown to act as an antioxidant, and have an anti-inflammatory effect on the body. [Peak Fitness]

Whether or not you believe in self “grounding,” going without shoes can offer a number of benefits. Test it out today to start getting the most out of your time outdoors.

Add “Back Support” to your Travel List

Planes, trains, and automobiles – as the old saying goes – are often a necessary choice when traveling across town, state, or even the world. No matter the distance, these vehicles get us where we need to go – hopefully in a timely fashion. However, when made for speed and distance, some transportation machines don’t have all the necessary comfort features that we’d like. For instance, headrests that are made for those over six feet, cushions that are too spongy, and seats that are often worn out from seating multiple travelers.

Of course, adjustments can be made to personal vehicles, such as your car or a bus seat. (Which are bulky, but provide ample cushion.) But when it comes to airplanes or long rides with a friend, sometimes the basics just won’t cut it.

However, thanks to a small travel carry along item, your comfort issues can be easily fixed.

Comfort That Defies Location

With the Contour Travel Back Support cushion, journeys of all lengths can be met with the proper spinal and rear adjustments. Simply attach the small travel piece to the back of your chair, and enjoy hours of extra back support. Through turbulence, red lights, and any kind of traffic jam, your back will be properly held into place. The cushion even folds down flat for easy storage. Keep it in your purse, carry on luggage, or slide in next to your newspaper; the cushion is so small and lightweight, it’s hardly noticeable.

The Back Support features can also be customized for the individual traveler. Because it sticks to your chair (or cushion’s) back, it can be set on any height. Use it for the lower back, mid-range, or upper back to address any section of pain. Then set it to firm, soft, or anywhere in between – it’s truly made to support any back needs.

The Travel Back also comes with:
  • Four-position lumbar support
  • Folding flat capabilities
  • Built-in hook fasteners
  • Winged sides to protect adhesive
  • Ventilation holes
  • Center slots for spine placement

Coming in as one of Contour’s more affordable products, the Travel Back Support is a must-have for the frequent (and no so frequent) traveler. With its versatility, ability to provide support, and ease and which it can be transported, this is a product every traveler should keep on their packing list.

How to Lift Properly

Proper Lifting Techniques
Lifting objects improperly can cause a strain on the back, arms and legs. Using poor lifting techniques can not only lead to strains, it can also cause serious injuries. Use these techniques to avoid injury.
1.   Before you lift the object think about the object you are lifting. You should know how heavy the object. Knowing how heavy it is will help know how much lifting you need to do. It will also prevent you from making any weird and sudden movements. Know where you are taking the object. Your path should be clear of any obstacles.
2.   Lift the object close to your body. You should have a firm grasp of the object and it should be close to the body. Doing this will make your lifting more stable.
3.   Keep your feet shoulder width apart, doing so will keep you stable. If your feet are close together, you may become unstable and fall. Make sure to also take short steps while you walk with the object.
4.   Keep the back straight and bend at your knees. Just like you should know what you are lifting before you lift it, you should also practice the motion of lifting the object. Pretend you are lifting the object and concentrate on the motion you want to take before you actually do it.
5.   Always lift with your legs, there are a lot stronger then you think. While bending at the knees and keeping your back straight, lift the object.
6.   If you are one that needs to lift objects often, try using a back support. Doing so will help you keep your posture aligned.
Using these techniques can prevent you from straining yourself, but if the object is too heavy look for help. It is better to ask someone to help you then having to spend time in the emergency room. If you do use someone to help you lift the object, make sure you are both on the same page. Lift the object at the same time and in same way; decide the path you will take before you move the object.

Recommendations for body positions post tummy-tuck surgery

Among the various trends in our ever-changing society, plastic surgery is certainly one of them. Abdominoplasty, better known as the tummy-tuck, has held one of the top 5 most popular surgeries title since 2010, as 116,352 patients underwent the knife, according to the Report of the 2010 Plastic Surgery Statistics by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Just as this invasive procedure is a cosmetic investment, proper care and recuperation must also accompany.
Starting with proper body elevation and positioning, from laying down to sleeping, there are certain precautions that need to be considered for optimal healing and comfort after tummy-tuck surgery. Supportive pillows come highly recommended for comfortable rest. The BackMax back and body wedge support system is ideal for this type of post-operative healing. The benefits of this product are countless, as it can be used in bed or on the floor and making it a perfect accessory for watching television, napping or reading. The Multi-functional full body support system helps creates positions recommended for elevating all parts of the body, including upper body, legs and feet.
However, Contour Living has highlighted the top eight most comfortable and supportive positions using the BackMax Back and Body wedge cushion.
Comfort can be found in:
Position 1:  An upright seated position
Position 2: Elevated knee and calf support
Position 3: Elevated head position
Position 4: Reclined with leg and calf support
Position 5: Arched position
Position 6: Elevated knee support position
Position 7: Reclined position with bent knees
Position 8: Supporting head, neck, knees and calves simultaneously
Offering your body this type of comfort and support will only enhance your results. We’ve taken the time to invest in the care of our bodies through extensive surgery, so it is just as important to invest in  top-of-the-line quality and care.

Comparison of Popular back Support Belts

Differences Between the LumboLoc, LumboTrain and LordoLoc Back Supports by Bauerfeind

The LumboLoc, LumboTrain and LordoLoc Back Supports from Bauerfeind all address some of the same indications but with different features. This presents customers with a more complete "system" including a wider variety of choices.

Visco-elastic Insert
Of these three back supports, LumboTrain is the only one that comes with a triangular shaped visco-elastic insert. This insert includes 26 massaging nodules which provide additional support plus a massaging effect to the lumbar spine.

Stays
The LordoLoc back support and the LumboLoc back support each have four anatomically contoured spring steel stays which facilitate correct posture in the lumbar spine. The LordoLoc features longer, thinner stays (two on each side of the spinal column). The LumboLoc has shorter and wider stays that are uniquely placed for optimal posture. The LumboTrain includes two flexible plastic stays, one on each side which prevent migration and rolling.

Active versus Degree of Stabilization
The LumboTrain is an active back support intended to be worn while the patient is engaged in day to day activities and/or while playing sports. The self-adjustable, visco-elastic insert, along with compression, provides an intermittent massage to relieve pain and give an additional sense of support to the lower back.

The LordoLoc and LumboLoc back supports are meant to be worn strictly as stabilizing orthoses. Both orthoses are to be worn as a static brace or with moderate to light movement intended. The LumboLoc has a thicker, more compressible material that feels tighter than the LordoLoc, at least on initial fitting. This is meant for younger, stronger patients who have low back pain. On the other hand, the LordoLoc has a less "compressible" feeling. this is more ideal for older and frail patients that have the option of additional compression with the two additional straps.

Strap System
All three of these back supports have hand pockets that make dressing easy and painless, for even the weakest patients. The LordoLoc is unique in that it also has two additional elastic tension straps to permit individually adjustable compression and thus variable adjustment of the stabilization.

Low Profile
All three back supports are lightweight and streamlined to fit against the body to create a low-profile therapy.

Sizes
All three of the back supports by Bauerfeind are available in 6 sizes based on a loose measurement of the waist.
