Survey Findings Prove Benefits of Contour CPAP Pillow for Sleep Apnea Patients

Contour Products Promotes Survey for National Respiratory Care Week, Findings Prove Benefits of Contour CPAP Pillow for Sleep Apnea Patients

Over 96% of Respiratory Therapists Agree, Mask Users Benefit From This Pillow

In conjunction with National Respiratory Care Week, Contour Products(TM), a leader in the sleep support
and comfort industry, is proud to promote the results of a 2009 survey conducted among respiratory therapists who work with CPAP patients daily.  One of the most common issues among CPAP therapy users is discomfort when sleeping with their CPAP mask, as a result of the mask pressing against their face. The Contour CPAP Pillow alleviates this with its innovative pressure-free zones that accommodate any respiratory mask so users stay comfortable, even in the side-sleeping position.

"National Respiratory Care Week is an ideal time to highlight that respiratory therapists from throughout the country have acknowledged and supported that the patented design of our Contour CPAP Pillow significantly
improves comfort among CPAP therapy patients," says Contour Products' founder Scott Davis. "We've received tremendous feedback from end users on these same issues, but to have members of the medical community respond as consistently and favorably as they did is truly gratifying and gives additional credibility."

Mask leaks were an important topic in the survey. More than 91 percent of respiratory therapists surveyed agreed the Contour CPAP Pillow is successful in reducing mask leaks, another major barrier to compliance
among CPAP therapy patients. Aside from causing dry skin on the face, mask leaks contribute to patients not getting the prescribed amount of pressurized air. Leaks compromise compliance because of the air leakage as
well as the discomfort and noise they cause.

As further proof of the Contour CPAP Pillow's effectiveness, 100 percent of the respiratory therapists surveyed agreed the pillow reduces the tendency of the mask to press against the face. Mask pressure is the
major factor in discomfort complaints among CPAP therapy patients, as well as a leading cause of non-compliance. Eliminating mask pressure is a tremendous step in the direction of patient acceptance and compliance for CPAP mask therapy, a highly effective treatment for Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

The Contour CPAP Pillow features that address key issues affecting patient compliance include ergonomically designed head, neck and shoulder support to reinforce comfort. The pillow has specifically molded spots for users to rest their ears when side sleeping. And, its inclined upper sides support the forehead to help prevent patients from rotating their chin downward, compromising airway alignment.

Other important features of the Contour CPAP Pillow include an advanced, precisely molded design made of poured foam for superior support and resilience. A cover of silky, quilted padding in the hollowed-out
sections of the pillow and along the shoulder area ensures that the mask, hose and body glide over the pillow when users change positions. It has a five-year warranty and boasts effective packaging that thoroughly conveys its features and benefits in a user-friendly format.

"It's important to note during Respiratory Care Week that the Contour CPAP Pillow is ideal for use both during titration and at home," says Scott Davis. "By controlling the mask variable during titration, the process
becomes more manageable and improves patient acceptance of the interface. Using the pillow at home ensures comfort and compliance after titration."

Make Beds Easier and Eliminate Back Pain

Eliminate back pain while making beds!   The Bed Made EZ is a great new tool designed to reduce strain to the back, neck, and shoulders when lifting of heavy mattresses (to make the bed!).  Many mattresses in today's homes weigh over 150 pounds and create an increased risk of injury while changing sheets.  As more customers choose luxury class mattresses, this trend is increasing. This simple tool can save you (or a loved one) from back pain plus it provides a new level of independence.

When making a bed, tucking in just the sheets alone requires your mattress to be lifted at least eight times - all from a stooped position of only 14” off the ground. This awkward twisting and lifting motion contributes to the back pain and is experienced by 85% of the population.

How does it work? The Bed MadeEZ:

  • Slick surface inserts effortlessly between box spring and mattress, lifting the top mattress as it slides in.
  • It alleviates strain to back, neck and shoulders
  • Holds mattress in raised position eliminating repeated lifting.
  • Can be used to tuck in linens.
  • Comes with a full replacement LIFE TIME warranty
  • Perfect for maids, homecare workers or anyone who makes a bed!
"The Bed MadeEZ is a unique device that can significantly reduce the physical stress of making a bed"

Tests Confirm the Cloud Mattress Pad

Contour Cloud Mattress Substantiation Sheet

Quality and duration of sleep are affected by many factors such as noise, mental stress, physical pressure concentration, posture and support.  Anything that can be done to reduce these negative factors improves sleep.  The Contour Cloud Mattress pad’s specially engineered design addresses issues related to pressure points, posture and support to dramatically improve quality of sleep and increase the duration of time spent in the deepest, most restorative levels of sleep.

The Contour Cloud Mattress Pad has been tested three different ways:

  1.  Sleep Efficiency Tests
    • Wrist Actigraph Studies measure muscle movements in the body during sleep.  This type of test is considered to be a good indicator of the quality of sleep that a person is getting.
    • When using the Contour Cloud Mattress pad, participants’ sleep efficiency levels rose dramatically.  On average, participants gained an extra 27 minutes of deep, restorative levels of quality sleep, and they experienced less fragmented sleep.
    •  Sleep efficiency levels are particularly important for people who are in situations where sleep times are limited, such as Navy personnel.  These people need to make the most of the time that they have to sleep, so that they can be better prepared to carry out their duties during awake hours.  There are numerous studies that point to a lack of sleep and/or poor quality sleep affecting a person’s level of alertness and his/her ability to function effectively and think clearly.
      •  A few examples are listed below:
      • Slowed reaction time
      • Creativity, short term memory and sense of humor are all compromised by a lack of quality sleep
      • One dramatic example of this is that the loss of one hour of sleep during daylight savings time causes traffic accidents to increase by 7%-8%
  2. Pressure Studies

    • Pressure studies measure the amount of pressure that the body has when laying on different types of sleep surfaces to show how well the body’s weight is distributed.  The more even the weight distribution, the lower the pressure.
    • The average person tosses and turns about 70 times during the night, resulting in fragmented, low quality sleep.  Often times, tossing and turning occurs when the person attempts to relieve pressure on a particular area of the body.  Shoulders and hips, for example, are pressure “hot spots” and often endure the brunt of the pressure when a person sleeps on a non-supportive surface.  The less supportive the surface, the less even the weight distribution is, which in turn causes the person to toss and turn.  A person often awakes during the night in response to pressure build-up to adjust his/her position in an effort to relieve it.
    •  When participants laid on the Contour Cloud Mattress Pad, as opposed to a regular mattress, there was a dramatic reduction in pressure points all over the body.  The participants’ weight was more evenly distributed, so pressure was relieved on “hot spot” areas of the body like shoulders, hips and knees.
    •  When you reduce these pressure points, you are able to sleep more comfortably in one position for longer periods of time, which minimizes fragmented sleep and maximizes time spent in the deeper, more restorative levels of sleep.
3. Posture and Alignment
    • In order for a sleep surface to be truly supportive, it must have some amount of cushion as well as a shape to it that matches the subtle curves of the body.  Mattresses are flat, they have no shape and often they’re either too hard, resulting in a rigid sleep surface, or they’re too soft, resulting in a hammocking effect that can be particularly detrimental to your lower back area.
    •  Video Fluoroscopy is basically a moving x-ray, which shows the inside of the body in motion.  With it, we are able to demonstrate how well the Contour Cloud Mattress Pad supports and aligns the body’s skeletal system.
    •  When the body’s skeletal system is properly supported, surrounding muscles are able to relax during sleep.

Contour Cloud Mattress Pad Construction and Features & Benefits

  1. 2-1/2” thick triple layer design features a surface layer of heat sensitive material called Soft-Touch memory foam
    •  Molds to fit your body’s every curve for superior weight distribution and minimal tossing and turning during the night.
    • This type of material was originally developed for NASA to cushion astronauts on lift-off.
    •  Ribbed surface allows air to circulate through the pad so you stay cool and comfortable during the night.
  2.  Middle layer contains a lumbar support
    •  Maintains the spine’s proper curve and helps to minimize low back pain caused by poor sleep posture.
    • Fills in the gap that flat mattresses leave around the lumbar and waist area to maintain the natural arch in your low back and encourage proper sleep posture during resting periods
  3. Base Layer :
    •  Constructed of high quality dense foam for excellent nighttime support
    •  Prevents the mattress pad from bottoming out underneath the body’s weight.

Mattress Genie Commercial

Ever wonder what the Mattress Genie does or how it works? Here's an "As Seen On TV" commercial Contour Products used to run:

There are many reasons you might want to lift your mattress - many are medical, but some are as simple as reading in bed, watching tv in bed or even eating in bed. Medical reasons include acid reflux, sleep apnea, spine problems, snoring, sinus problems, easing congestion and more.

We sought to create an inexpensive solution to counter the outrageous expense of adjustable beds. Ever price one of those? - Expect to pay several thousand dollars! The Mattress Genie mimics the benefits of an adjustable bed by allowing the user to raise the upper portion of the mattress using a simple remote control. Convenience is key, because each user can raise the bed to the perfect level for their situation. Once up, use the same remote to lower the mattress again. It couldn't be easier.

Plus the simple design allows anyone to install it quickly and easily. It requires no tools, and has only two parts. Slide the bladder between the mattress and box spring, connect the motor to the bladder hose, plug it in to an outlet, and you are ready to go. Read more about this innovative bed wedge here.

Top 10 Ways to Reduce Sciatic Pain

The discomfort associated with sciatica can be very painful and affect your quality of life. Symptoms can range from mildly annoying to those serious enough to disrupt daily activities. Normal life interactions like sitting, standing and walking can be affected.

Sciatica is a medical term used to describe symptoms (aches, pains, discomforts) of other lower back conditions. These include “bulging” or “slipped” discs, herniated discs, spinal stenosis, etc. Sciatica pain is associated with the sciatic nerve which runs down the back, through the buttocks, and down and into both legs. Sciatica refers to indications affecting the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the human body. Irritation to the sciatic nerve can cause the pain and discomfort we associated with sciatica These symptoms can include lower back pain, burning sensations, mild tingling, numbness and mild to severe pain in the legs and buttocks. Below are 10 simple ways to reduce sciatica pain:

    1. Side sleepers should place a pillow between their knees during sleep to keep legs vertically aligned, stabilize the pelvis and reduce spinal twisting at night

    2. Back sleepers can use a pillow below their knees to take pressure off of the low back.

    3. Improve sitting posture by making sure that your seat supports the natural curve of your spine. Avoid sitting cross legged as this can aggravate the sciatic nerve and keep the wallet out of your back pocket. Your feet should be flat on the floor and remember to get up and walk around often.

    4. Maintaining proper sleeping posture will allow spinal discs to rehydrate during sleep and will give muscles time to rejuvenate for the next day

    5. Stay active and keep moving. Recent studies indicate this is more often a better treatment for sciatica than bed rest.

    6. Exercise will better equip muscles to support the skeletal system

    7. Keep excess weight off. Carrying a lot of weight around can take a serious toll on sciatica and back pain sufferers

    8. Stretch often to improve flexibility which can help prevent sciatica.

    9. Avoid activities that require extreme body rotating which can aggravate sciatica

    10. Hold items close to your body and lift with your legs, keeping your back straight

Contour Leg Pillow Helps Sciatica Pain and Herniated Disc Pain

Non-Surgical Treatment for Sciatica Pain, Spinal Stenosis and Disc Herniation

Low Back Pain – Most everyone will experience low back pain at some point in their life. Other associated pains include burning, tingling and numbness in legs, buttocks and thighs. Common causes of these low back pains include disc herniation, sciatica and spinal stenosis. These back and spine conditions can be exasperated while sleeping, especially on one's side.

These ailments are sometimes caused by robust physical activities, injury, and over-exertion. However, for all of us age and activities of normal life contribute to low back pain. As we proceed through life, our joints, muscles and bones all change in composition, ability and interaction. As people get older, common conditions such as osteoporosis and osteoarthritis can affect the whole body. Some can affect remaining life cycles and some are temporary conditions which can be improved with shorter term treatments. Hiow we treat these conditions can vary widely; including surgical procedures, pysical therapy and many non-surgical options for reducing pain.

These back and spine conditions can be exasperated while sleeping, especially on one's side. Side sleeping is the preferred position for optimum back posture and alignment. Unfortunately, sleeping on your side can cause ther problems. Patients may aggravate low back pains associated with sciatica, disc herniation, and ruptured and/or bulging discs.

When sleeping on your side, your legs may not stay aligned, and the leg on top can drop forward slightly, moving and resting in a lower vertical position, causing an unhealthy rotation of your pelvis. This position can cause a series of problems such as:

    1. First, extra pressure is placed on the sacroiliac joint (SI joint) thereby causing sciatica pain.
    2. Next, when the pelvis rotates (see dropped upper leg described above), a twisting force is placed on your lower vertebrae and discs. This can effect the lumbar area of the lower back region all the way up to the thoracic region of your spine, or middle of the back.
    3. Third, the twisting of the spine can cause the muscles and tendons in the back to tighten and place undue stress on spinal ligaments
    4. Lastly, Spinal stenosis and related pains are going to be more sensitive to improper alignment and stability while sleeping.

There is help for side sleepers with disc herniation, sciatica and spinal stenosis and low back pain - use the Contour Leg Pillow to help place the lower spine in proper alignment and maintain proper posture throughout the night.

This simple but effective Leg Pillow can immediately stabilize your pelvis (by reducing the twisting), reduce stress on your sacroiliac joints, muscles and ligaments. It’s amazing how much this simple pillow can help sciatic nerve pain and lower back pain.

Back Max Helps Recovery from Surgery

The Back Max from Contour Products incorporates 3 wedge cushions which can be used together or in any combination for total body support. Many customers purchase the Back Max for proper positioning during recovery after surgery and body injuries. The Back max is available in standard or deluxe versions. The deluxe version adds massage to the main body cushions and includes a deluxe fleece cover and memory foam pillow.

Here are actual customer reviews provided by users of the Back Max cushions during recovery from surgeries:

    * Patricia January 11, 2009: You will not go wrong buying this Product. I bought it due to Mastectomy Surgery and needed to sleep in the Inclined Possition, And could not be more Pleased with the comfort.
I highly recommend this Product. It has also helped my acid Refux issues. It will be well worth your money. Enjoy

    * J Newfield February 10, 2009: I am on day 7 of having a full tummy tuck, liposuction and breast lift. At first I was worried about how this system would do in our bed since we have a pretty high bed. I had nothing to worry about. I could not have gotten through without this and recommend it to anyone getting ready to undergo a tummy tuck. It kept me elevated perfectly and I even found that the cover kept me toasty warm since the medicines I was taking for pain kept me colder than normal. It was very easy to roll to the side to get out of bed the way the doctors recommend. The only issues I had were that I liked to tuck pillows on both sides of it for arm rests. That was no problem though. It does come unzipped rather easily and I didn't love that fact but all in all I'd buy it again in a heartbeat and love whoever created this. Thank you for making my healing process easier!

    * Jane March 14, 2009: This has allowed me to sleep relatively comfortably in a semi-upright position after shoulder surgery, when I have to wear a sling all the time. I found the addition of a small neck pillow helpful for neck comfort.

I had wondered about the width of the cushions, but as I'm rather small, they seem just fine. A larger person might need something wider. If the system is on a bed, you can dispense with the zipping and position the back and leg cushions at whatever distance is most comfortable.

    * Anonymous April 8, 2009: This Backmax is spectacular! I have a physical condition that makes it much more comfortable to sleep on my back. Before having this I could never stay on my back for more than a half an hour. Since getting it I have always spent the whole night on my back in complete comfort. A couple of tips: 1) large safety pins work well to keep the zippered sections from coming apart, 2) an hour glass shaped neck pillow has been a good addition.

    * Anne May 17, 2009: I just had knee surgery and have slept on this for 3 nights very well.
To make it work - I need a memory foam back pillow (sleeping on my back would normally cause me lower back pain).
Neck support is a problem. I tried different pillows the first night, with no luck. What works is a memory foam travel neck pillow.
When watching t.v., I just rest my head and neck on it.
When I am ready to sleep, I go ahead and wrap it around my neck, so my head is supported no matter what I do when I am asleep.
The best part is that with pillows under my surgery knee, it's elevated
straight out (the way my Dr. wants it - for the best, quickest recovery).
You do need to use pillows on either side for arm rests.
I am so glad I have this!

    * Sherry June 10, 2007: This is reviewed several times at http://www.tuckthattummy.com/forum/forum.php and is very useful for recovering from tummy tuck surgery. Lot's of girls have bought it and absolutely raved about it. Had to try it myself!

Mary Anne October 16, 2006: I have had my BackMax for over a year and I absolutely love it. I use it every day. It fits perfectly on my couch. I work from home as a writer and I am able to work on my laptop (I have it on an AirDesk) while I recline with leg and calf support. (position 4) - I have had 2 major spinal surgeries and this is the most comfortable position for me when I am writing, watching TV, etc - it takes the pressure of my spine and tailbone, and helps to relieve sciatic pain. I love it - The covers come off and wash nicely in the washer and dryer. I highly recommend this product!! MaryAnn H. Pittsburgh, PA

    "Revitalizing the Back:

We are living longer lives and we all want the best of health. Regularly revitalizing and renewing the cells of the body by eating well and staying mobile is key. Working on revitalizing the back is one of the cornerstones of health. It enables us to remain active for as long as possible.

This revitalizing program uses many quick repetitions to stimulate the body from different angles. The structure of the exercises forms the basis of the rhythms, which will regulate your breath as you exercise. Notice how the Arm Swing and the Leg Swing both have a waltz-like quality.

    Tips for revitalizing the back:

    • Each exercise has a natural rhythm - As you exercise, accentuate this rhythm, as if you were showing a friend how to do it.

    • Notice how you breath subtly changes from exercise to exercise. Let your body go with the rhythm. Sometimes it even helps to hum along as you go.

    • Inhale through the nose. Direct air into the back of your throat. Open the lips and gently exhale through the mouth

    • Modify When Needed. You can hold the Prone Rocker position still and simply hold the Plank Balance for a couple of breaths. "

Five Reasons Why Treating OSA is Important to Your Health

OSA or Obstructive Sleep Apnea is a breathing disorder that can have a devastating impact on your overall well-being, when left untreated. Obstructive Sleep Apnea is characterized by brief interruptions of normal breathing while sleeping. A disruption in a patient's breathing can last in duration from 10 seconds to a as high as minute or longer! Further, this disruption can occur 20 to 60 times per hour!

Over time, this condition can cause stress on your body, increasing the risk for many serious health problems including:

    1. Studies have shown that Obstructive Sleep Apnea increases your risk for coronary artery disease, heart attack irregular heartbeat, and even congestive heart failure which can lead to heart disease.

    2. If your Obstructive Sleep Apnea is severe, your blood pressure can raise to unhealthy levels.

    3. Obstructive Sleep Apnea researchsuggests OSA can help lead to diabetes because it is associated w/impaired glucose tolerance and insulin resistance. Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body fails to use insulin effectively and is a leading cause of death in the USA.

    4. A recent study in The Sleep Journal, provides evidence of possible brain damage which can occur in patient's who have Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

    5. Obstructive Sleep Apnea can increase a patient's risk of stroke as well. OSA can interupt blood flow to the brain.

With proper physican guidance and CPAP therapy, Obstructive Sleep Apnea is a very treatable condition. Every CPAP therapy is different, and will be based on each person's medical history, a thorough physical examination and probably sleep studies. The commonly prescribed treatment is Continuous Positive Airway Pressure Therapy, or more commonly "CPAP Therapy". Continuous pressure provided by a air blower helps open the breathing airway while sleepingand helps prevent a lapse in breathing.

CPAP Therapy is very effective in many cases of Sleep Apnea, but, sometimes can present difficulties for various patients, especially in the areas of sleep discomfort associated with CPAP masks. The CPAP Pillow is available to help patients sleep comfortably, while wearing a CPAP mask, and still provide proper head and neck support. See the CPAP pillow at Contour Living today.
