A warm glass of milk before bed is always a calming means to close the end of a busy day. The soothing, warm beverage helps to ease the mind and body for rest. Even if not a milk fan, the notion of something warm before bedtime is certainly worth the effort in order to promote optimal rest. According to the national Sleep Foundation, as much as 64 percent of American adults experience sleep difficulties. That warm glass is sounding more and more appealing.

Judith Fertig, contributing author for Natural Awakenings Magazine mentions a concept called “sleep hygiene” in her article, Sleep Aides versus Sleep Sappers. The room temperature, amount of light in the bedroom, fluffiness of the mattress or bed pillow to what dinner consisted of all factor into the quality or lack of quality rest we will receive that night.

Neuropathic physician with Seattle’s Bastyr University, Jamie Corroon suggests staying away from spicy foods, nightcaps (alcoholic beverages) and caffeine.

“Caffeine’s stimulant effect peaks in about one hour and then declines as the liver breaks it down. So, if you go to bed by 11 p.m., you’ll have to stop your caffeine intake by 2 or 3 p.m. to avoid insomnia,” advises registered dietician, Joy Bauer.

What are recommended by physicians and neuropaths are nuts and juices, an assemblance of herbs, in tea form or supplement form, a complex carbohydrate of 200 calories or less as a bedtime snack and of course a warm glass of milk.

The warm liquid resonates with sleep as most patients drank milk as infants before bed, so that fond memory is reintroduced.”

I received mine (Contour CPAP pillow) in the mail yesterday. Despite the reviews of it being too thin for proper support or too thick at the top I went to the web site and selected the medium model. Having read some of the negative comments prepared me for creative solutions. About the pillow being too thin, I put another older pillow underneath, it was at a perfect height and allowed me to put my arm underneath; bonus since I sleep on my side and stomach. About the top being too thick, I found that it rolled chin downward and almost forced my face to the point where the mask fit exactly in the cutout. It did it's job. More than eighteen million Americans suffer the wrath of a condition known as sleep apnea. One of the easiest ways to detect the presence of this condition is by identifying continual disturbed sleep resulting from difficulty in breathing at night. An Apnea episode, which is the cessation of breathing, can last anywhere from 2 to 20 seconds at a time and usually occurs numerous times throughout the night. A person suffering from this condition typically wakes up in the night due to sudden inconsistent breathing patterns. It is also generally observed that most sleep apnea sufferers snore and have bouts of snorting or gurgling sounds.

The sleep apnea condition obviously hampers quality of sleep and causes its victims to experience excessive day time fatigue and irritation. This condition does not have the capacity to get healed on its own and hence medical intervention is necessary. In fact, this condition generally occurs over a number of years. As one could imagine, years of cessation of breathing creates a situation where oxygen levels to the body are hindered. This condition leads to more serious health issues that negatively affect the heart. One should remember that this is quite a dangerous disease and if a person does not receive medical treatment on time then this disease can turn fatal as well.

There have been many cases where the presence of sleep apnea has gone unnoticed as the patient is not aware of its occurrence. Generally, apnea sufferers are put on notice of their condition by their roommates or bed partners. It has been observed that sleep apnea is experienced more by men and people who are overweight. Race also tends to be a defining factor in the development of this condition. Hispanics, American Africans and Hawaiians possess more risk of contracting this condition than their Asian and Caucasian counterparts.

Sleep apnea is broadly categorized into two types- Obstructive or Central apnea. It is Obstructive sleep apnea that is most common form being reported in 80% of the cases. In this condition the airways gets blocked during the time of sleep due to airway tissues collapsing. One of the most common signs of this form of sleep apnea is snoring. Snoring mainly occurs when the air tries to enter the blocked airways. Reports suggest that overweight people mainly have to bear the brunt of apnea, but it can affect anybody regardless of their body weight.

The Central form of sleep apnea is not as common as the obstructive form and the former generally occurs because of neurological brain malfunctions. Here the mouth does not receive appropriate signals to perform breathing, as a result, the muscles are not controlled properly and the breathing pattern goes haywire.
Continuous Positive Airway Pressure devices or CPAP equipment is the preferred form of treatment for apnea related conditions. It has been proven that treatments using CPAP equipment can improve the quality of sleep as well as overall health of the patient. CPAP equipment consists of a small machine that exudes pressurized air, into tubing which is attached to an apnea mask that is fitted over the mouth or nose, which opens up the blocked airway. Because this treatment is affordable and does not require surgery, it has become very popular over the past 20 years. In fact, most insurances companies routinely pay for such services.

If you suspect that you have sleep apnea, your doctor will be able to direct you to the proper sources to determine if you are eligible for such CPAP equipment treatment. Typically, the diagnosis of sleep apnea is officially determined in a sleep laboratory. Such testing involves an overnight stay to determine if your body is experiencing apnea episodes. If this is the case, then another overnight stay is required to see if CPAP equipment can correct the apnea condition. It is important to note that besides the usage of CPAP machines, there are also other forms of treatment such as surgeries or dental devices that can be effective in treating sleep apnea. But, the use of CPAP machines is considered the easiest and most effective forms of treatment.

Quality and duration of sleep are affected by many factors such as noise, mental stress, physical pressure concentration, posture and support. Anything that can be done to reduce these negative factors improves sleep. Sleep Efficiency Tests

Wrist Actigraph Studies measure muscle movements in the body during sleep. This type of test is considered to be a good indicator of the quality of sleep that a person is getting.

Pressure Studies

Pressure studies measure the amount of pressure that the body has when laying on different types of sleep surfaces to show how well the body’s weight is distributed. The more even the weight distribution, the lower the pressure.
The average person tosses and turns about 70 times during the night, resulting in fragmented, low quality sleep. Often times, tossing and turning occurs when the person attempts to relieve pressure on a particular area of the body. Shoulders and hips, for example, are pressure “hot spots” and often endure the brunt of the pressure when a person sleeps on a non-supportive surface. The less supportive the surface, the less even the weight distribution is, which in turn causes the person to toss and turn. A person often awakes during the night in response to pressure build-up to adjust his/her position in an effort to relieve it.
When participants laid on the Contour Cloud Mattress Pad, as opposed to a regular mattress, there was a dramatic reduction in pressure points all over the body. The participants’ weight was more evenly distributed, so pressure was relieved on “hot spot” areas of the body like shoulders, hips and knees.
When you reduce these pressure points, you are able to sleep more comfortably in one position for longer periods of time, which minimizes fragmented sleep and maximizes time spent in the deeper, more restorative levels of sleep.

3. Posture and Alignment

In order for a sleep surface to be truly supportive, it must have some amount of cushion as well as a shape to it that matches the subtle curves of the body. Mattresses are flat, they have no shape and often they’re either too hard, resulting in a rigid sleep surface, or they’re too soft, resulting in a hammocking effect that can be particularly detrimental to your lower back area.

Low Back Pain – Most everyone will experience low back pain at some point in their life. Other associated pains include burning, tingling and numbness in legs, buttocks and thighs. These ailments are sometimes caused by robust physical activities, injury, and over-exertion. However, for all of us age and activities of normal life contribute to low back pain. As we proceed through life, our joints, muscles and bones all change in composition, ability and interaction. As people get older, common conditions such as osteoporosis and osteoarthritis can affect the whole body. Some can affect remaining life cycles and some are temporary conditions which can be improved with shorter term treatments. Hiow we treat these conditions can vary widely; including surgical procedures, pysical therapy and many non-surgical options for reducing pain.

These back and spine conditions can be exasperated while sleeping, especially on one's side. Side sleeping is the preferred position for optimum back posture and alignment. Unfortunately, sleeping on your side can cause ther problems. Patients may aggravate low back pains associated with sciatica, disc herniation, and ruptured and/or bulging discs.

When sleeping on your side, your legs may not stay aligned, and the leg on top can drop forward slightly, moving and resting in a lower vertical position, causing an unhealthy rotation of your pelvis. This position can cause a series of problems such as:

1. First, extra pressure is placed on the sacroiliac joint (SI joint) thereby causing sciatica pain.
2. Next, when the pelvis rotates (see dropped upper leg described above), a twisting force is placed on your lower vertebrae and discs. This can effect the lumbar area of the lower back region all the way up to the thoracic region of your spine, or middle of the back.
3. Third, the twisting of the spine can cause the muscles and tendons in the back to tighten and place undue stress on spinal ligaments
4. Lastly, Spinal stenosis and related pains are going to be more sensitive to improper alignment and stability while sleeping.

It kept me elevated perfectly and I even found that the cover kept me toasty warm since the medicines I was taking for pain kept me colder than normal. It was very easy to roll to the side to get out of bed the way the doctors recommend. The only issues I had were that I liked to tuck pillows on both sides of it for arm rests. That was no problem though. It does come unzipped rather easily and I didn't love that fact but all in all I'd buy it again in a heartbeat and love whoever created this. Thank you for making my healing process easier!

I had wondered about the width of the cushions, but as I'm rather small, they seem just fine. A larger person might need something wider. If the system is on a bed, you can dispense with the zipping and position the back and leg cushions at whatever distance is most comfortable.

Before having this I could never stay on my back for more than a half an hour. Since getting it I have always spent the whole night on my back in complete comfort. A couple of tips: 1) large safety pins work well to keep the zippered sections from coming apart, 2) an hour glass shaped neck pillow has been a good addition.

* Anne May 17, 2009: I just had knee surgery and have slept on this for 3 nights very well.
To make it work - I need a memory foam back pillow (sleeping on my back would normally cause me lower back pain).
Neck support is a problem. I tried different pillows the first night, with no luck. What works is a memory foam travel neck pillow.
When watching t.v., I just rest my head and neck on it.
When I am ready to sleep, I go ahead and wrap it around my neck, so my head is supported no matter what I do when I am asleep.
The best part is that with pillows under my surgery knee, it's elevated
straight out (the way my Dr. wants it - for the best, quickest recovery).
You do need to use pillows on either side for arm rests.
I am so glad I have this!

Why Leg Raises Sometimes Aggravates Lower Back Pain

Leg raises can be a useful ab exercise, but for some people the risk of injury might outweigh the benefit gained from doing leg raises. Let's talk a little more about what's going on with your abdominal muscles and lower back during leg raises.

When you perform leg raises, your abdominal muscles work with your hip flexors. Your abdominal muscles work to keep your pelvis stable, while your hip flexors work to move your legs. This is actually an important motion to master, but here are the problems that may arise.

Problem #1: Your Abdominal Muscles are too Weak to Keep Your Pelvis and Back Stable!

Our legs are heavy, so our abdominal muscles must work really hard to keep our pelvis and back in the correct position. As the legs lower towards the floor, there is a tendency for the back to arch. When the back arches, there is extra pressure placed on the joints of the back. The job of the abdominals is to stop the back from arching excessively, so if you have weak abdominals you will likely have extra pressure on your spine when you perform leg raises.

Ab Workout Tip: You can build up your abdominal strength and protect your lumbar spine by limiting your range of motion during leg raises. Begin with your hips at 90 degrees. Lower your legs until you feel your pelvis tipping and your back arching; at that point reverse directions and return to the starting position. As you move closer to the floor more pressure is placed on your spine so limit your range of motion and move only as far as you can control.

Workout Tip: If you have trouble keeping your legs straight in the air, it is likely a sign of poor flexibility in the hamstring muscles. Stretching your hamstrings can improve your form during this ab exercise.

Workout Tip: If you have any trouble performing leg raises, begin by mastering reverse crunches. Reverse Crunches can help to strengthen your abdominal muscles and increase the flexibility in your spine, and they are a great exercise for beginners and athletes.

Problem #2: You Have Bad Posture and Bad Alignment in Your Spine!

Here are 2 simple statements about posture. When your posture and alignment are ideal, you have the least pressure on your joints and the most stability. And, when your posture is not ideal, you have more pressure on your joints and less stability in your lower back. Bad Posture adds pressure to your back.

Problem #3: Your Hip Flexors add Pressure to the Joints of the Lower Back!

When the legs move during ab exercises, the hip flexors contract. When the hip flexors contract, pressure is added to the back. This is a normal process, and this happens during every exercise and at every joint.

But if you have joint irritation in your low back aggressively working your hip flexors can add excessive pressure to your joints. This problem is really only a problem if you have lower back injuries.

If you have weak abdominals, poor posture, and a back injury, then, full straight leg raises all the way to the floor are probably not the best ab exercise for you. If you are a beginner, start by practicing the drawing in maneuver and the plank exercise. Then, move on to reverse crunches and regular crunches. Once you have mastered the basics, it is okay to progress to leg raises and more challenging ab exercises.

Sleep Apnea Patients - Get the Most out of CPAP Therapy

If you’ve been diagnosed with Sleep Apnea, chances are you use a CPAP, (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machine during the night. It is estimated that about 4 million people use CPAP therapy in the United States today, and as many as 35 million Sleep Apnea cases remain undiagnosed.

CPAP therapy is the most common method for treating obstructive sleep apnea. It works by gently blowing air through the airway at a pressure high enough to keep the airway open. It is regarded as the most effective method for treating obstructive sleep apnea, however, using a CPAP can present certain challenges for the patient.

The Sleep Apnea Association gives patients a C- on compliance. Considering the serious nature of the disorder, this is a dangerously low grade. While several factors contribute to low compliance rates, mask discomfort is one of the larger issues. Masks tend to press against the face causing pressure and discomfort. The constant flow of air from the machine can result in dry, cracked skin. CPAP users also complain that they feel restricted to a certain sleeping position and that the hose gets in the way during the night.

Your first step should be to consult with a practitioner about the right type of mask. There are many varieties available. Also, be certain that your air pressure levels are set appropriately and that you are using the right type of CPAP machine.

Once you’ve got the right equipment in place, you might consider looking into the various sleep apnea aids that can help patients deal with comfort issues and improve compliance rates.

A sleep apnea pillow, for example can go a long way toward relieving mask pressure against the face, and can also help reduce mask leaks. Hose covers made of soft materials that glide more easily over sheets are available as well. Skin creams applied prior to bedtime each night help keep skin moist and healthy and certain pillows are designed to allow freedom of movement during the night.

Differences Between the LumboLoc, LumboTrain and LordoLoc Back Supports by Bauerfeind

The LumboLoc, LumboTrain and LordoLoc Back Supports from Bauerfeind all address some of the same indications but with different features. This presents customers with a more complete "system" including a wider variety of choices.

Visco-elastic Insert

One cause of snoring is sleeping on your back (head up). Sleeping in this position can limit the free flow of air through the breathing passageways. A simple change of positions, to one such as sleeping on your side, can help open the passage and enable easier (and quieter) breathing.
Excess weight can enlarge the internal organs in the breathing passageway and can also contribute to snoring. Maintain a healthy weight and you'll reduce this cause of snoring. In addition, a healthy diet will improve your over-all well-being and produce more productive sleep.
